WINTER-FLOWERING CLEMATIS

For interest in the garden during the winter season, I would definitely recommend planting winter-flowering Clematis. They are ideal for climbing up and over any structure, and do seem very reliable. These photos were taken about a week or so ago of two of the four varieties I have, cirrhosa Jingle Bells, Wada's Primrose, cirrhosa Balearica (I chose this one as it reminds me of my grandpa, who lives in Mallorca) and Early Sensation.

I wouldn’t say a record fast grower, but after a few years you may find it starts to thicken up, but don’t worry, we gave ours a quite severe haircut in the summer and afterwards it was looking pretty sorry for itself, but now, well it has grown back beautifully and has flowers in abundance.

The flower petals look like crinkled fabric... and very delicate.

My dad appears to have the golden touch when it comes to clematis... he has it running up the walls either side of his back door which is very welcoming whether you are coming or going!

We have the evergreen one and it is an absolute monster of a plant, beautiful but HUGE.

These are lovely blooms. What aspect are they facing? I have a west facing wall that might like to carry a winter clematis...

You're doing much better than I am with my Balearica - it's scuttled to the top of next door's garage roof and sits there mocking me. I have to go upstairs to the back bedroom to see any of the flowers. Where does your grandad live in Mallorca? I've been involved in a research project near Alcudia - it's a lovely place. I bought my Balearic to remind me of good times there.

Just wanted to let you know I chose a daffodil for my Gradad, it is under misty glen (I chose it because I my childhood home is by Bishopstone Glen!)

I am a big fan of clematis... and I particularly love this
group. I had the Wisley Cream cirrhosa and it romped along the walls of our last garden. Very pretty delicate flowers. I will have to see if I can cram another clematis into our plot.

This is fasinating. Ive been a fairly avid gardener for over 20 years and never knew a winter flowering clematis existed. Thanks for the informative post!
