COMPOST

Do you make your own compost? This is the question I asked in my poll for March. Thanks to everyone who voted, a record number of forty-four! Thirty-five of you said you do make your own compost, and nine of you don't.

I am fortunate enough to have a large garden with space to sacrifice for composting, and many of you have allotments which is a great place to be able to do this too.

From this above ...

... the result is this, which is full of worms! At this time of year I leave this lovely 'black gold' in situ to grow Summer Squash and at the end of the summer season, it is bagged up to be used for potting up seedlings, cuttings or divisions, either in the autumn or spring.

If you would like to compost, but don't know where to start, click on garden organic for everything you need to know.

My youngest son just wrote an article about compost for his learning community's newsletter. We are all big fans of compost magic in my family.

I found the site interesting and helpful! I do NOT compost as our in community the homes are too close together not allowing me the right place to do this ..a neighbor did last year and did NOT care for it properly and we all had an infestation of mice..once the compost was eliminated they disappeared..I think they did NOT know how to compost.

thankyou for the compost info! Once I start my veg patch I will dedicate a little area to compost.

The great thing here in Belgium is that we have either paper bags to put "composting" waste in or a green bin, so it get's composted by the authorities which is a great idea.

we compost and have worms. i have to have two compost buckets going at once so we don't accidentally feed the worms the wrong thing. i don't mind though - i hate waste and knowing that uneaten food is going back to the good earth is a wonderful thing!
here's hoping that more people start composting.

Good post Louise and photos! I have 8 compost bins in total. It's still not enough though. Had a lovely time yesterday spreading the rotted compost on the flower beds. Great to have some nice weather at last.

Have a great weekend!

I had been eyeing up a new composter, from the recycling leaflet that came through the door, but I not sure about all the plastic they are made of.

You have a very charming blog. You seem to love all of God's creatures. I am especially glad to see the squirrel photo. So many people consider squirrels pests...but I am very fond of them and think they possess many sterling qualities. In fact I think the human race could learn alot about thrift, industriousness, and hard work from squirrels. They are always on the go! I have enjoyed visiting your blog, and shall return.

Regards,
Lavinia

Compost is a wonderful thing isn't it!
To put back into the earth what we have taken before can't be a bad thing..
