PAINTED LADY
This beautiful butterfly migrates from North Africa. We have seen a large population this year. They don't hibernate over winter in this country, and in autumn some will make the long journey home, and the ones remaining will die.
A plant they seem to love is verbena bonariensis. I counted nine on these plants at one given time yesterday!

We haven't seen many butterflies this year so far, but last year at this time, it was the painted ladies I saw the most of in my Nebraska, U.S. yard. I like your photos!
Most of the butterflies I've being seeing lately have been cabbage whites with a few of these, and other brown ones.
I just wish I could get a few photos of them as you have! xx

We hatch Painted Ladies every year in my kindergarten class. When they are ready we take them outside, let them loose, and wish them luck.
Such a great learning experience for the kids.
As a teacher, we planted a butterfly garden as a school wide project. Painted Lady butterflies cam in "kits", and the kids hatched them and released them on one special day. On Long Island, Tiger Swallowtails on butterfly bushes are common. This year the butterfly population in my garden seems diminished. Is it due to the many rainy days?
