TOAD

Not being an expert on amphibians I presume with its warty attire, this is a toad? Anyway whatever, it was unintentially disturbed when I shifted a log from a log pile.

I hope the poor chap recovered, it seemed to turn to stone when I was taking this photo. I suspect the playing dead, looking like concrete look, is a defence mechanism against predators.

Does anyone know?

I'm so glad he stayed still to have his photo taken.
Very cool.
I don't think I've ever seen a toad in everyday life.

I think it's a toad! We have lots of toads in the garden and they stay still for a very long time!

I couldn't tell you what he is, but he sure is ugly....but in a rather fascinating way....

Wow! Toadily assume! Sorry, I couldn't resist. What a great photo, and thanks to Flighty for the link. I think it's better that he freezes and turns to stone, rather than leap about and cause others to jump! It's amazing to realize how many little creatures are hiding among the rocks, logs and grasses.

I noticed you over at Lavinia's and thought I'd stop in. You have a lovely blog.
I've been to the south of England a number of times and love it there. I have a very good friend in Brockenhurst near Southampton.

I think this is a toad - he certainly knew where to hide out to keep himself well-camouflaged. Too bad you disturbed him, but I'm sure he will re-adapt elsewhere.

I think he is Mr Toad...I do like Toads but they can be very dangerous to have in garden if you have dogs...so I was told, they can be poisenous!

I thought it was concrete. That is extremely interesting how they can camoflauge themselves. I have these little lizards that change colors depending on what they are on. I saw one turn to rust one day. It was so cool!

Well captured..I think he's just a bit of a poser! We don't get toads in the garden.. just frogs, skinks (little lizards) and blue tongue lizards..occasionally an unwelcome ssssnake :D Gx
p.s. I have tagged you on my blog if you feel like having a play

Every where I turn, people are posting pics of frogs and toads! Yours is definitely a crusty looking fellow.

He is definitely a Toad..
We have both frogs and toads and I have noticed that toads do not hop .. they amble and their skin is much more rugged than a frogs. Concrete is a good description..
He will do wonders for the slug population!
