REDCURRANTS

Currants, including red ones, have the highest content of fruit acid of all berries. They also are very high in vitamin C, vitamin E and fibre. They grow in grape-like clusters on sturdy perennial shrubs.

The two bushes have given a good crop this year, which is good, but I do find harvesting them a bit fiddly and time consuming, and always put off doing it until the point when I really do have to.

Now I have picked a couple of punnets full, I wonder what I can do with them?

(punnet) - a small, square basket used for holding soft-fruit.

They look so beautiful, like the finest jewels with the sun shining on them like that.
Redcurrant jelly. Perfect.

I've never baked or cooked with these fruits. I think ginger darlings came up with a good suggestion. It's a wonder the birds don't get them before you do?

You must have loads of birds plundering your perennial shrubs. Do you get Cedar Waxwings where you reside?

Your blog is a plethora of goodies - a veritable feast for the eyes - most of the senses in fact!

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Poetikat's please stop in when you can. As I will here.

I have never had those...are they a rare fruit? Or only grown in some required conditions?

Yaaay!I was looking forward to a picture of your red currants.

If you hate destalking them and if you drink (do you drink?) here's an easy thing, which you may know. Often known as Bachelor's Jam...odd.

Alternate layers of red currants (on stalks) and sugar in a large glass jar with either a stopper, or seal - it has to be closed. Then pour over either vodka, if you're feeling Scandinavian, or brandy, if you're not. Seal up and leave in a cool place for three months, then strain and decant. Keep in the fridge. Little cordial glasses- full after dinner are delicious, or you can mix with soda water for an aperitif.

Other red fruits work too, or a mix.

Otherwise..meringues,cream and straight-up red currants?

I have a Christmas Cake recipe from Nigella Lawson that I'm planning to make for this year's festivities and it calls for red currants! Can't wait! I love your blog!

This is a good job that my girls do in summer..picking the currants daily, I have never made anything with them, we just eat them with raspberries and strawberries and a little icing sugar to reduce the tartness..also get blackcurrants and have made a couple of batches of cordial which is lovely.

The Christmas cake recipe sounds interesting though!

There are lots of lovely redcurrant suggestions above! I think I would opt for adding them to a summer pudding as threadspider suggested. I love a chilled summer pudding on a hot balmy day or even an opressive, dull and humid day in July!!!

Such luscious, RED fruit! I've only ever heard of red currant wine, like in Anne of Green Gables (and we all know what trouble THAT led to!) or red currant jam. I've never had a currant anything. Wonder if you can make pie? Or something like strawberry shortcake only with currants. It would look pretty at least.
